SUMMER TEACHING SERIES: bridges and gaps

Most of us know far more about the Christian faith than we manage to live. + Eugene Peterson

Starting June 24 and lasting through most of the summer at Sanctuary Church we are going to address the following question:

how do we close the gap between

what we know and how we live?

That’s it. One question. Throughout the teaching series we will be using the language of bridges and gaps. Most of us have experienced the great ache of the human condition (Romans 7:15-25) –  that serious gaps often form and grow between what we know to be true (as it relates to everything from morality & ethics to relationships & community) and the “living out” of these convictions. The writer James warns us of this disconnect in Scripture…

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Those who listen to the word but do not do what it says are like people who look at their faces in a mirror  and, after looking at themselves, go away and immediately forget what they look like.  But those who look intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continue in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.”  + JAMES 1:22-25

We hope then, that through this series we can offer some insight on how to build bridges /close these gaps. We will look at the classical spiritual disciplines, the life and practices of Jesus, the power of the Spirit, and the models of community we see in the early church to address the ever-troubling disconnect between what we believe and how we actually live. Finally, as with all brokeness, we will spend time addressing the persistant love and grace of Jesus that meets us in our gaps and gives us the strength, power, and resolve to build bridges.

We hope you will join us,

The Sanctuary Leadership team and Pastor Andrew Mook
